Tides with either low gain or loss are perhaps the best time to go crabbing as it gives the crabs more time to find the bait since they are not fighting the current. An incoming tide naturally gives the crabs access to more feeding zones making it the ideal tide to fish.
The tidal range (difference between high and low tide) also varies throughout the year and is largest during the spring. There are three basic types of tides: semidiurnal (twice-daily), mixed (also twice-daily), and diurnal (daily).

These extra high tides are often caused by the relative position of the earth and moon, which our orbits are closest to one another. However, here in Florida, king tides are also affected by seasonal wind patterns. As a result, on the east coast of Florida we typically have extra high tides in the fall.
Tidal height ranges around the semi-enclosed Gulf are generally small compared to other coastlines. The differences in the number and size of tides at different coastal locations is because the continents, complex coastlines, and variations in water depths disrupt the tidal wave as it moves around the Earth.
The king tides occur at new and full moon when the Earth, Moon and Sun are aligned at perigee and perihelion, resulting in the largest tidal range seen over the course of a year. So, tides are enhanced when the Earth is closest to the Sun around January 2 of each year.
